The clients needed to provide accessible accommodation for an elderly relative and reorganisation the living spaces to onto the extensive mature gardens. Working closely with the client to ensure all the voices of the multigenerational family were heard during the design phase, creating spaces which allow for both privacy and interaction for all, from the tweenager to the grandma in need of some extra family support.
A large open plan kitchen and dining area provides space to be together however the separated living room can provide peace and quiet or segregate noisy video games. The comparatively plain elevation to the rear of the building was a blank canvas for contemporary materials and clean lines of the new extensions. The timber used softens the appearance the concealed gutters and down pipes keeps the lines clean. Natural light is brought deep into the space by judicious use of roof lights at the junction between new and old.
