A conservation led approach to the reoccupation of the Victoria Tower as part of the Restoration and Renewal Programme following the decant of the parliamentary archives. The design looked at options to retain the historic significance of the Tower as the worlds tallest building when it was completed in 1860, while upgrading to current standard for accessibility, security, fire safety and office accommodation. Introducing modern and compliant new staircases and lifts to a tower with such a limited foot print was challenging however the new plan arrangement emerged through my careful research into Charles Barry’s original design intent.
Additionally I led the heritage impact assessments for the whole of the R&R project and worked closely with the fire engineers to assess the proposals and their impact on the historic fabric of the building.
